My name is Katie Wertz (she/her) and I am an emerging contemporary dance artist and choreographer based on Gidimt’en Clan Territory of the Wet’suwet’en Nation (Smithers, BC).
My artistic practice is a growing constellation of performance and community engagement, deepening around the (re)connection and retrieval of embodied movement. I understand the body as a site for individual and collective storytelling, connecting lineage to the contemporary.

My early technical training focused on theatre based performance. I studied classical ballet, Limon modern dance and various contemporary dance modalities, including Contact Improvisation. I attended the Arts Umbrella Undergraduate Program in Vancouver, BC (2012) and trained with world renowned contemporary dance artists including Justine Chambers, Sidra Bell and Azure Barton.
While there may be greater access to professional opportunities in the city, I was compelled to return to my home community of Smithers, BC. This choice came with the challenge to innovate professional dance opportunities outside of the theatre and to take bigger risks in performance. My choreographic style evolved toward improvisation and site-responsive work as I embraced and deepened my relationship with the dynamic landscape and waterways of Wet’suwet’en Territory. The rhythm of my artistic practice is informed by the Northern seasons, working indoors during the winter months and shifting to outdoor sites come late spring.
My identity as a 2nd generation Colombian-Canadian greatly informs my practice. I integrate cultural values through centring the joy, resiliency and pleasure of connecting through dance as a guide in all my work.
Alongside my artistic practice, I fulfill roles as a Community Dance Connector with Dance West Network (Vancouver, BC), President of Myriad Dance Projects (Smithers, BC) and Education Assistant. I am also a mother to two children, 8 and 9 years old.
